Cost of Livin – High and Going Up

Ronnie Dunn, Cost Of Livin’ Lyrics

Everything to know about me
Is written on this page
The number you can reach me
My social and my age
Yes I served in the army
It’s where I learned to shoot
Eighteen months in the desert
Pourin’ sand out of my boots
No I’ve never been convicted of a crime
I could start this job at any time.

I got a strong back
Steel toes
I rarely call in sick
A good truck
What I don’t know
I catch on real quick
I work weekends
If I have to
Nights and holidays
Give you 40
And then some
Whatever it takes
Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin’s high and goin’ up.

I put Robert down as a reference
He’s known me all my life
We attend the same church
He introduced me to my wife
Gave my last job everything
Before it headed south
Took the shoes off of my children’s feet
The food out of their mouths
Yesterday my folks offered to help
But they’re barely getting by themselves

I got a strong back
Steel toes
I rarely call in sick
A good truck
What I don’t know
I catch on real quick
I work weekends
If I have to
Nights and holidays
Give you 40
And then some
Whatever it takes
Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin’s high and goin’ up.

I’m sure a hundred others have applied
Rumor has it you’re only takin’ five

I got a strong back
Steel toes
I’m handy with a wrench
There’s nothing I can’t drive
Nothing I can’t fix
I work sun-up to sun-down
Ain’t too proud to sweep the floors
Bank has started calling
And the wolves are at my door
Three dollars and change at the pump
Cost of livin’s high and goin’ up.

    Hey Damon,

Now that’s a great way to tell the story about these economic times. I’ve got to get over here more often to see what you’re up to. You really find excellent resources (sad, funny, or just plain true) to share while educating the consumer.

I saw your comment over on Stephanie’s blog about articles. Let me know if you want to talk about that. 🙂

      Thanks Vernessa,
Ya, it is an awesome song and it will really hit home with a lot of folks out there.

Are you talking about my question regarding help with some financial writing projects?

It’s scary that this is the real state of affairs for many people. People are willing to work themselves to the bone and they still can’t get by. It’s shameful how poorly our government is protecting our economy. Time for a change.

    • Damon (132 comments) says:

I agree, people are struggling and times are really tough. I think the government is actually trying to do to much to protect the economy and should just get the heck out of the way and let it get going again.

Thanks for stopping by to add your thoughts.

Well, we just got another Republican into Congress to replace Anthony Weiner. Hopefully that is the first step to making a positive change.

While I don’t consider the current administration as lazy or undeserving, I do think they are unexperienced. We are bordering on Socialism and it’s truly starting to affect day-to-day living.

It’s hard enough getting a job when you’ve “…never been convicted of a crime.” (I must remember to add that line to my resume.) I’d hate to be an ex-con seeking employment in this job climate.

A great song that sums up the tragedy in the workforce today. It’s too bad we can’t play it backwards and get all those people those jobs back.

    • Damon (132 comments) says:

      Hey Steve,
Everyone knows that’s what happens when you play a country song backwards. How do you turn an mp3 file in the other direction? ha ha

  5. Ana (6 comments) says:

It’s a really god metaphor for the times we are living in. It actually reminds me of Orvel’s “Animal Farm” and the character of the Horse who works and works, harder and harder as long as he can, until he dies.

    • Damon (132 comments) says:

Yes, times are pretty tough out there for a lot of folks. Now is the time that people should focus on getting rid of debt and start pushing the balance sheet in the other direction.

This is so true.. Why is it that the most affected of this are those in the middle class to poor families? so sad.

  10. Sandip (1 comments) says:

A moving song – and it resonates with so many people.

However, I think you should follow this post up with a more optimistic song to leave things on a high 🙂

We are always hoping to have a better and good social, economic, and political stability in our country, but still there was an evil when it comes to money. So many people are still suffering from hardship…Then, we just work harder to strive our family..Have a nice day!

comparing all the countries in the world, America has still the lowest cost of living rate in the whole world. Sometimes it goes up but definitely sometimes it goes down. Nice composition, i can relate my life on your song.

    • Damon (132 comments) says:

      Hey Peter,

Thanks for taking the time to comment on the site. I would tend to disagree though that America has the lowest cost of living rate in the world.

Not that I would rather live in most of the other countries though.

Loving the song lyrics, a really creative way to view the current economic recession (unless you are in China or India)

Awesome lyrics, thank you for sharing!

This song illustrates the difference between those people that are not too proud to accept any type of work, and those that feel they are entitled to everything without working. I found the lyrics quite moving, and I know so many people who are in the same predicament. America is definitely in crisis mode and we need real solutions, real job growth, and huge cuts in spending. True leadership is not defined by useless rhetoric but by competent management, sound fiscal policy, and practical solutions to the most difficult problems. Just my two cents. Thought provoking song.

    • Damon (132 comments) says:

Thanks for taking the time to add your 2 cents Monica.
I agree that the sense of entitlement in this country is growing at an alarming pace.

    Nice post Damon.
A very good song with so moving, even sad lyrics. Most of times though, truth is sad.
First time here Damon, but I’m planning to stay.

Yup! and still goin’ on higher, there is a need to double time, to stretch patience and stretch the budget too.
Such a nice song, and it really reflects the high cost of living today.

  23. charotzz (1 comments) says:

Is there no chance for this to go down? I have been working like a horse to pay bills, food and kids education.Though I work 16 hours a day but I am still short with my budget. Living graciously now a days is hard to achieve, you should be brisk to do things in one time to just to live and eat.

  24. Rohit (1 comments) says:

A very touching song based on the fact of today’s world. Living cost have increased at 200% in last 1 year and yet approaching to go up. Life has already became a hell.

  25. credit repair specialist (5 comments) says:

This song is wonderful! I could be the theme song for the “Occupy” and “99-percenters” movements. It represents what most “real” people are going through right now.
