While I agree that in many cases a debt settlement approach is not the best answer.  There are times where debt settlement, when done correctly, can be the best alternative for a consumer given the right financial circumstances.  

Yes here in the states we do have debt management programs.  They are typically referred to as Consumer Credit Counseling (CCCS)programs.  Given the proper cash flow, they can certainly be an effective program for many people.</description>

		<description>&lt;p&gt;Debt Settlement should be avoided at all costs. I was wondering if in the US you had a similar service to that of a debt management company? Basically this company contact all a consumer creditors negotiating better terms and payment periods.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Good point, and likewise you should fire or simply not hire any debt settlement firm that tells you that they will put you on a four year debt settlement program.  As a rule of thumb, if you cannot raise the funds to settle your debts within 2 years or so, debt settlement is probably not a good option for you.  Most settlement companies cannot help you settle your debts quickly, because they are charging so much money in fees that you would usually have to save up for an entire year just to pay the fees.&lt;/p&gt;
