One of the hardest lessons to get people to learn is not to get themselves into debt in the first place. This is a lesson which is particularly hard to teach when we have an administration which demonstrates such incredible irresponsibility. My own father never bought anything he couldn’t pay for outright and it was one of the best things he ever taught me.

Hey Matt,

That is good advice. You can definitely negotiation directly with your creditors. The one thing I would add to that, is to make sure to first at least speak with someone who can educate you about your different creditors and the techniques for negotiating directly with them. That information will save consumers thousands of dollars just by knowing what to look for.

I know it’s not feasible for everyone, but the best bet at debt settlement is to stop spending and start paying off your bills. I know that sounds simple, but you have to start somewhere. Call the companies and negotiate payments on your own – most of them will work with you.
